How Can Your Major Make the World a Better Place

 I have Aymara heritage from both sides of my family. I am the grandson of a Yatichiri and for some years I helped the Andean community to which I belong. I have joined projects and jobs where Aymara culture and language are rescued. In 2019, I participated in an Aymara and Quechua workshop thanks to the Program of Native Peoples of the Recoleta City Council. There I contribute with my experiences as a member of the Aymara community and also with what I have been learning in the Sociology career.


I have also tried to learn Andean music, so the song of our grandparents never dies. I joined an Andean music band called Muxa Aru, there I learned to play Tarka and participated in different musical events where I was able to share with many people who respect and share their experiences about the Aymara people.


I am currently finishing my degree in Sociology and I want to take advantage of what I learned as a student to continue promoting, sharing and teaching about the Aymara culture and language.

When I was a little, I wanted to be a psychologist. I thought that the psychology was talk with people and try to make them feel better. In that part of my life, I felt very talker and be psychologist seem to a dream job. When I going to apply to University, there are different careers that I liked, for example philosophy. In the end, I apply to bachillerato and there I realized that I love sociology and transfer there. As for my experience in University until now, is not so bad. However, sometimes is not that easy that a thought. Be in the university for so many years was so complicated to me because I must leave my native city (Arica), live in Santiago far away of my family and build a new and completely different. Someday, I would like to work in a multidisciplinary team, maybe in a social program like the native population’s program in the Recoleta’s municipality. The keyboard of my life

 My favorite piece of technology is my keyboard. I have it since 2011, I have been using this keyboard for a decade. In fact, it is old, it is not a modern keyboard, neither is an expensive keyboard. I like to play songs on my keyboard when I have free time. I use it to stress relief, to relax or to practice songs that I like. I like the simplicity of my keyboard and how it continues working despite the years. It is one of the few objects that I brought from Arica when I came to live in Santiago. I think that without my keyboard I would feel sad.

A little about me

  Hi everyone, my name is Erick José Alberto Ibáñez Marca but I use the acronym EJAIM like my nickname. I was born in febrary 19th and I lived most of my life in Arica with my grandmom, grandad and my sister. I growed in a small home within a peripherical area called “Población Cabo Aroca” near of a hill. Since 2016 I’m living in Santiago for studies. First I studied Bachillerato in University of Chile and then I started a study Sociology in the same university. All this time I was living in differents places, but since the last year I live in Pudahuel. My favourite hobbie is read books, especially literature. Also I enjoy listen music (like Soda Stereo and Sufjan Stevens) and watch movies and series. The last serie that I watched was “Fargo”, which I think is very amused and exciting.
